Relationships, Leadership, Results
- Relationships, Leadership, Results
“In organizations, real power and energy is generated through relationships. The patterns of relationships and the capacities to form them are more important than tasks, functions, roles, and positions.” ~Margaret Wheatley
Everything that occurs in life occurs within the context of relationship. Everything we learn in life we learn through relationship. Everything that works in life works because of our relationships. Relationship is the ground upon which we stand – at home, at work and in the world.
Our interconnectedness is expanding by degrees every day, whether in personal communications or in global business transactions. When we discover and cultivate our ability to create successful relationships, we experience relationship as a gift to ourselves and others. We depend on our relationships to nourish and sustain us through times both good and bad.
Even though the underlying truth is that we are all interconnected, experiencing connection consistently takes skill and practice. In order to have satisfying relationships, each of us must learn what it takes to make our relationships work. Recognizing this, we can master being in right relationship with others in the moment and over time, whether an intimate partner, a family member, a friend, a neighbor, a member of our community, a business colleague, or a stranger.
In order to build relationships that support our leadership and generate lasting results, we need to be willing to ask and answer challenging questions that stimulate us to explore new perspectives and practices in our quest for learning, growth and transformation. Here are a few questions to consider as we begin the conversation:
- What do you most appreciate about your current relationships?
- What do you find most challenging?
- Where do you want to be more fully engaged?
- What opportunities for learning do you see?
- What is the next step on your leadership path?
Systems Coaching and Consulting
- Systems Coaching and Consulting
We live our lives and run our businesses as part of multiple, diverse human systems. Each of us is a human system we call an individual, and we are simultaneously part of larger human systems that comprise our families, communities, organizations, cultures, nations and world.
As leaders, we need to be aware of the quality and impact of our interactions with the wide range of human and organizational systems that influence us and are influenced by us. Systems Coaching will allow you to significantly increase the power and flexibility of your practical and creative leadership, whether as a business owner, family member, community member or global citizen.
Our communities, our states, and our nation need to preserve and practice the core values of learning and growth in an atmosphere of respect, collegiality, and the ability to disagree while retaining mutual respect. We must be able to do this at all levels. Individuals want, to an overwhelming degree, to come to work and be able to make the greatest contribution they are able to make, in an atmosphere of support, trust, and dignity.
Systems Coaching and Consulting believes that every individual, family, partnership and organization can walk this path.
- Emergent Systems: The Butterfly Model
The overarching framework that we use to orient ourselves to the client’s external, relational, and internal systems is the Butterfly Model of Complex Human Systems. The metaphor of the butterfly’s metamorphosis captures the work that occurs within the coaching relationship.
Our lives and organizations are often interrupted by transformational events which bring the accumulated resources of the past into creative tension with the potential for the future. We understand these events to be the natural process of metamorphosis, which every thriving system undergoes.
The butterfly model helps us understand:
- Systemic forces influencing our ability to achieve our goals
- How more and less visible forces impact our awareness and actions
- Which forces need the most attention or the least attention
- How to broaden and deepen your focus
- How to harness transformational power for personal and organizational change
- Systems Perspectives
A leader’s effectiveness depends on their ability to continuously adapt and align the complex systems they are to the complex systems they are in.
We define systems thinking as “a way of thinking about, and a language for describing and understanding, the forces and interrelationships that shape the behavior of systems.” As coaches, we help clients examine the forces and interrelationships that shape their own behaviors and the behaviors of the environments in which they operate.
The Systems Perspectives approach enables optimum performance by developing greater awareness, clarity and knowledge of systems – illuminating the less visible aspects of the systemic environment, both internal and external – and increasing responsiveness. Our programs are designed to enhance our clients’ ability to operate efficiently within systems and interface effectively with systems.
We invite you to partner with us in taking the next step on your leadership path to profitability, sustainability and contribution. Contact us to continue the conversation.

A Note about the book: Shortly after You and Your Partner, Inc. was published, Jeffrey received his diagnosis, and the work of sharing the book was set aside. After walking with Jeffrey through his departure from the world, and grieving his absence, Miriam is returning to share the wisdom they gained from their long life together as a couple in business, and from the many couples they had the privilege of interviewing as a basis for the book. “I want to honor the creative process we engaged in fully, the vision we shared, the work we developed, and the learning we did as a couple – all that is captured in the book. Ultimately, it’s about what makes a relationship, a family, a business, work well and bring the ultimate reward – joy.”

Administrators, Deans, and Chairs are trained to excel as individuals, but don’t receive the equivalent training in collaborative leadership. They often lack the organizational and interpersonal tools to guide departments through their issues, leading to an escalation of problems over time which result in crisis, and increasing reports of physical, emotional, interpersonal and psychological stress in faculty and administrative leaders.
As part of a facilitated group of academic leaders (Administrators, Deans or Chairs), you will:
- Cultivate your leadership in group process and collaboration
- Address breakdowns in civil discourse and accountability
- Create norms for personal and collective responsibility
- Heighten sensitivity to generational, gender, and cultural differences
- Reinforce and sustain collegiality to enhance individual and collective performance
- Create organizational and interpersonal health, effectiveness, and sense of well-being in departments, divisions, and areas

Miriam’s work with OBOS for nearly 50 years is central to her leadership journey. In addition to sharing her own story, in that spirit she is able to help women recognize their own leadership journeys and continue to expand them, one person, one family, one organization, one step at a time.

As a founder of the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective, Inc., the organization responsible for writing this best-seller, Miriam played an instrumental role in shaping the women’s movement and transforming the global conversation.
The vision and voice of female leadership has evolved significantly since that time. The challenges in the current work environment have increased women’s passion and determination to make a difference while being personally fulfilled. These aspirations are critical for creating a sustainable future for our children, grandchildren and future generations. Now more than ever, women need insights about the timeless and essential ingredients for leadership development and success, Miriam’s experience inspires women leaders to increase their impact by building networks that align with their voices and values and support their actions.

- Living Gratitude: Meeting Challenges with Grace
Miriam and her son, Noah McIntyre, offer talks on embracing the challenge of Parkinson’s disease. Miriam and Noah were enormously grateful for the time they had with Jeffrey, their beloved husband and father. Motivated by Jeffrey’s diagnosis, they found ways to be grateful for their partnership, and for the friends and communities that supported them on this journey.
Gratitude allowed them to thrive in the midst of the most difficult experience of being with a loved one throughout the journey of diagnosis, death and dying. Jeffrey and Parkinson’s were both teachers that allowed them to live gracefully and joyfully even as Jeffrey was ending his life. They share experiences that can benefit families who are facing health or other life-ending challenges. Miriam and Noah share the possibilities, practices and wisdom gained from using the challenge as an opportunity to grow and learn in their own lives, as well as powerful lessons they received from Jeffrey himself.
Miriam and Noah also have much to offer people walking similar challenging paths about creating and enjoying a powerful, healthy and inspiring mother-son partnership with gratitude as the basis of love and connection.
